Where We Go One, We Go All

January 2003

Happy New Year!

Trails End.......

This will be our final Trails End article for 2002 and the first one for year 2003. Memphis Tour Riders have come a long way since we booked our first member applications on April 1, 2002. In the nine months that we have been in existence our membership has grown to fifty members. Not bad for a newly chartered AMA Motorcycle Club that received it's Tennessee Nonprofit Corporation Charter in April. B. J. and Hildia Max did an outstanding job of editing our monthly newsletter this year as well as covering our 2001 activities in the December Happy Trails. B. J. wrote an excellent recap of our many events. We will again have fun in 2003 as our membership grows. Please remember, the Memphis Tour Riders can only be as good as you. the members, want it to be. Your participation is the key to our continuing success.
We did not have a meeting in December. In lieu of our regular meeting we held our first annual Christmas Party. Along with the house parents, Johnny and Bea Mayhan, the Memphis Tour Riders joined forces with Jimmy Rogers and The Fayette County Bass Club and threw a Christmas Party for the nine children of Davis Cottage at the Tennessee Baptist Children's Home. Memphis Tour Riders & Fayette County Bass Club members in attendance were Jimmy & Margaret Rogers, James, Karen, Matt & Jennifer Rogers, Cary Wanda & Kelly Rogers, Carter & Barbie Taylor & Girls, Jason Risley, Robert Crawford, Dick & Fran Salveson, Dan & Linda Randall, David Elston, Floyd Nunnelee, Dorothy Shipman, Don & Marion Oller, Danny & Lori Parker, Sandy Stroud, B. J. & Hildia Max, Tim Hendrickson, Terry & Mary Carol Scott, Mike Hooper, Brenda Hamilton, Gene & Kathy Dennie, Stan & Jean Viets and of course Santa Claus.
The children provided a list of their wants and needs, personal sizes, color preference, etc. and members of both clubs personally purchased and gift-wrapped gifts for all the children. We also had tremendous support from some of our community business firms. We can't thank them enough for their help and we appreciate their dedication. A separate list of the firms, solicited by both clubs and their donations are listed in this newsletter.
Thanks to Dan Randall and the Charity Committee for a super job in coordinating all the many details for this successful party. It wouldn't have happened with out them. We also want to thank all the ladies and families from both clubs that supplied and then served the food, drinks, and desserts along with other condiments and goodies.

Motorcycle Cop's Family Fighting For Insurance

By Chris Conley

The family and friends of a veteran Memphis police officer badly injured while leaving the job on a police motorcycle in September are fighting City Hall in an attempt to get full insurance coverage for him. James Ashe, 55, an officer since 1972, was riding east on Paul Barret Parkway on Sept. 10 when the bike went off the road and crashed, critically injuring the officer. Ashe was a lieutenant at the time, but made captain while recovering from his injuries.
The City of Memphis on Nov. 1 notified Ashe's family that his case will not be covered as an on-the-job injury, even though police officials considered him to be on call and available for service at the time of the crash.
Police union officials say the decision sets a bad precedent for all officers who use take-home vehicles. The practice is encouraged by the city as a crime deterrent. Ashe's family and members of the Memphis Police Association have appealed the decision and expect a final verdict soon from the city, MPA vice president Tommy Turner said.
The city's decision to reject the claim will cost the family thousands of dollars, if upheld, said Alex Ashe, the officer's son. The motorcycle officer, now undergoing rehabilitation, suffered spinal and brain injuries and may never recover fully, his son said. "He's making some good recovery, but we don't know if it will be full," Alex Ashe said.
Dep. Chief Charles Cook on Oct. 8 directed a memo to city officials to back up Ashe's claim. "This motorcycle is a law enforcement vehicle . . . with M.P.D markings, blue lights and siren," Cook wrote. "At all times, while the officer is operating this vehicle, he is required to monitor his police radio and respond to calls for service from the dispatcher, from supervisors, other officers or citizens requiring assistance." If an officer fails to respond to calls for assistance, he can be disciplined, Cook stated.
"Lt. Ashe's status while operating this police vehicle is on duty," Cook's memo concluded. "The whole Police Department is backing us up," said Alex Ashe. "We just want what's right, to get him the health care he needs."
On-the-job injuries are treated as workers' compensation cases and covered completely, with no out-of-pocket expenses, according to Billy Robbins union secretary-treasurer. Otherwise, medical bills are processed through the employee's personal health care plan, which has various deductibles and caps, which fall on the family, Robbins said.
The denial of Ashe's claim puts all officers in a predicament, union official Turner said. "Up until Jim Ashe, we have always been covered . . . I haven't seen anything that changed." If the city does not reverse this decision, the MPA plans to sue, Turner said.

WELCOME
Robert and Judy Crawford

Robert and Judy Crawford, our newest members, joined the MTR at the Christmas Party. They hail from Somerville, Tennessee and ride a 1993 Candy Red GL1500. Another Red 1500. That makes roughly a dozen within the MTR ranks. We're gonna' look like a drill team if we ever get together at the same time. Thanks Robert and Judy. I hope we live up to your expectations. We will certainly try and we look forward to meeting you at next month's meeting.

MEETING NOTICE:

The Memphis Tour Riders will meet Thursday, January 9 at Jimmy C's Café, Sycamore View and Macon Road. Stan has been searching for a new place but so far has come up empty handed. But, in case something turns up between now and meeting night, everyone will be informed by e-mail. Until then, Jimmy C's it is…

Eat at Six, Meet at Seven.

MOTORCYCLE SAFETY FOUNDATION
EXPERIENCED RIDER COURSE

FEBRUARY 23rd

The MSF Experienced Rider Course is being offered at Southwest Tennessee Community College on Macon Cove. (Old State Tech) Of the four dates available MTR decided on Sunday, February 23, 2003, the latest date offered. It's an all day, 8 AM to 5 PM course, classroom and range. The cost is $75 to be mailed with the registration or they will accept Visa or MasterCard only, plus $10 for insurance coverage due the day of the class. We must register individually. The deadline for the mail-in registration is past so you will have to go down to the Southwest Campus to register. You can pick up the Southwest Tennessee Community College Continuing Education booklet, complete with the registration form at any Memphis/Shelby County Library or pick it up at Southwest registration. If you are interested in taking the course on Sunday, February 23, 2003, you may want to pick up the form and register right away before the course fills up? The last report was there were only five vacancies left so you might want to hustle on down right away.
In addition to filling out the form and $75.00 you will need the following:

Course Number: 90-0016
Section S13

The course is subject to cancellation if not filled. Please
remember Honda Riders Club will reimburse up to $75 to HRCA members that complete the course. Also the completion of the course makes you eligible for a 10% across the board discount on your motorcycle insurance. Lets make this an all MTR class and benefit from the experience. I read a story by one of the big wig magazine writer who said he was skeptical that he could learn anything by taking the MSF course. He said he was surprised at just how much he didn't know about riding motorcycles. And this guy had been riding all kinds of bikes for the last thirty years. So, if you're a skeptic, you too might be in for a surprise. Certainly can't hurt and 10% off your insurance will most likely save you thirty to sixty bucks a year. That will almost pay for the course in itself. So get on downs and register for this thing. Who knows, it might save your life.

The best thing to give up in a New Year's resolution is to give up giving up…….

Trails End…………………Continued From Page One
Our appreciation to the entire group of chefs that did the cooking on the Davis Cottages new grills. Thanks to the staff of Tennessee Baptist Children's Home for their help in furnishing the recreation room, Christmas tree, tables and kitchen. We had fifty good people sign our guest book, including our newest members Robert L. and Judy Crawford of Somerville, Tennessee who joined the MTR at the party. And last but not least, Santa Claus showed up via motorcycle to the excitement of the children. Santa distributed the gifts, led the group singing jingle bells and left everyone with thoughts of sugarplums dancing in their heads. How fortunate we are to have been able to offer a little Christmas Cheer to a few needy and deserving children.
You can further help the Tennessee Baptist Children's Home on a volunteer basis at anytime. Here are a few of the many ways: Pray for children and staff regularly. Participate in "gym/game" night each month. Office help is always appreciated as well as help with lawn care; i.e. mowing, landscaping, painting/repairing. You could provide passes to the movies, skating, ball games, museums, bowling, etc, and help with teaching or other professional services. If interested please contact Diane Chavers: 386-3961 Ext. 229 she will be happy to give you information.
If you have any ideas or suggestions for future rides and activities please contact B. J. Max. I'm sure he would welcome your input.
Please remember there may still be openings for the MSF Experienced Rider Course at Southwest Tennessee Community College on Sunday February 23, 2003. Call me if you have any questions. We have several members already signed up.
We are happy to report on our hospital patients Bill Jones and Jim Ashe. Both have improved enough to be transferred to rehab facilities. Bill & Jim are now both in the Methodist HealthSouth Facility across the street from the Union Avenue Methodist Hospital. Bill is in Room 311B and Jim is in Room 221-A. Even though they are improving, They still need our prayers to help them along the road to recovery.
Thanks to our Webmaster Eddie and Bonnie Garner our Christmas Party pictures are already posted on the web. www.mtrmc.com along with archives of past pictures as well as the monthly newsletters for your review. As you have probably noted we have a non- public password protected "Members Page" containing a list of members with their personal information by just clicking on the "Contact Us" link on the home page. Memphis Tour Riders members can easily assess the page by getting the password from the Webmaster. On this page we now have the end of year 2002-detailed Memphis Tour Riders financial information. This will enable members to review our yearly income and expenditures as well as see when their membership is due for 2003.
Our next meeting will be January 9, 2003. Please watch for a possible new meeting location, as of now it is tentatively to be at Jimmy C's Café but this is subject to finding a larger meeting place before the 9th. The meeting location will definitely be confirmed by e-mail prior to the January meeting.
