Where We Go One, We Go All

September 2003

Something happened on our most recent ride that's never happened before that I can remember. After enjoying some fine catfish at the Lakeview Inn in Reelfoot we saddled up and headed home. David Elston used to work this area when he was in the potato chip business and he knew the back roads well so I asked him to lead us home. I can do that see, 'cause I'm the Road Commander.
We left Lakeview around six PM I guess but a few of the members needed gas so we pulled in to a station in the little hamlet of Hornbeak. Well, you know how a gas stops go. Everybody gets off the bikes for a leg stretch and a few usually duck in the station for a cold drink or a potty break. Our stop was like this but after a few minutes we were ready to go so we barreled out of the station, probably in a bigger hurry than normal cause we had just left the café back at the lake. We took a hard left at the top of the hill and away we went, just like we had good sense. Charley Gibson was riding drag and says he tried to radio us that we had a rider left in the station but I never heard him. David said he didn't hear Charlie's transmission either. We were five miles away by the time we realized that we were short two motorcycles and four people. .So we stopped and wasted several minutes while trying to figure out what to do. David eventually back-tracked to Hornbeak while the main group continued on to Highway 51 where we parked and waited.
The missing bikes, not knowing that we took highway 183 out of Hornbeak, went to Troy via highway 21 while David tried to run them down. To make a long story short, we finally got back together and everyone arrived home safe and sound.
Now, if we had left Mary Carol Scott in the service station or Darnell Gibson or even Hildia, everything would have been hunky-dory. They would just sluff it off and say, no big deal. Stuff happens. But we didn't leave them. No, we had to run off and leave, of all people, Brenda Hamilton. That's like a Mafia chauffeur running off and leaving the Don standing on the sidewalk in the rain. And make no mistake about it, there's going to be hell to pay. So everybody stay alert and keep your guard up, at least for the next few weeks. And whatever you do, don't make Brenda mad.
Brenda, if you read this I apologize, but it wasn't my fault. It was David Elston's fault. Remember, he was leading. That's what I get for putting the club loon in charge. But I fired him that night and nipped the problem in the bud. Seriously, our apologies to Brenda Hamilton, Mike Hopper, Charley and Darnel Gibson. We got in to big of a hurry and we are sincerely sorry. And thanks to Floyd Nunnelee for riding on ahead and securing a table for us. We were a large group and I'm sure that saved us from waiting on the porch all afternoon. We had a great turnout too. Fifteen bikes, plus twenty members and two guests, all listed below. A big wheelie to all…

Larry Cole, Gene and Kathy Dennie, Myron and Bev Coney, David Elston, Stan Viets, Floyd Nunnelee, Robert and Judy Crawford, Charley and Darnel Gibson, Mike Hopper and Brenda Crawford, Terry Scott, Bill Franklin, Bill and Bonnie Healey, BJ And Hildia Max and last but certainly not least, Brian Thompson and Mike Toddy, guests of Terry Scott and Charley Gibson.

I guess everyone knows by now that our MTR web site is back up and running. We owe Eddie Garner, our Web Master for life, a big thank you for getting us back on line amid all the damage he and Bonnie experienced as a result of Hurricane Elvis. How about that new look? Also for those technically inclined the archived pictures are stored on the AOL site and can be reviewed as before without any problem. When Eddie has time he will transfer them to our huge new 1 GB server, it takes a lot of time to transfer them with a 56K modem. (Update: Picture transfer has been completed)

BLAZING SADDLES THREE

Well, our third annual trek to McMinnville and the Foglight Foodhouse will soon be upon us so its time to make those reservations. The ride this year will be over Monteagle Mountain instead of around it as in the past.
Update: We were told by the ladies at Shoney's in McMinnville recently that the Foglight Foodhouse is moving into a new building. It'll still be on the same picturesque road, just new digs. Maybe the new parking lot will be paved and level. No more dumped bikes huh? That would be a nice and I'm sure the food, as always, will be delicious, …Man, I can taste those Portebella mushrooms already…

Reservations should be made for

Letter to the Editor:
What Does It Mean to say
“Where We Go One We Go All”

As most of you know, my motorcycle suffered catastrophic engine failure (in my mind anyway) on the way to last months meeting. Arriving at Shoney's on foot I informed everyone that my bike had broken down. The members of our group sprang to action, offering help to trailer the bike, repair it or any other assistance I might need. Of course with the Yamaha I received a five year roadside assistance program so most of the help wasn't needed but it sure made this transplanted Yankee feel good that it was sincerely offered.
After the meeting, Hubie (Hubert Gross) gave me a ride to my bike and offered to return with a trailer if the roadside assistance plan didn't work out. Then about five minutes later B.J. & Hildia, Mike & Brenda, Charley & Darnell and Stan showed up to make sure that I was OK and that help was on the way. Even after my assurance that all was well not one person would leave until my bike was on the tow truck and I was on the way to the safety of my home. It really goes to show you that our motto is not just a string of words on a patch but a true feeling of camaraderie and friendship not found in many organizations. I am very grateful that I ride with this group and sure hope that someday, if the need arises, I will be able to help a fellow member of the Memphis Tour Riders out in any way that I can. Thanks for making a Yankee feel at home.

Trails End…………………Continued From Page One

Terry Scott and several others participated in the project August 2nd and they had a nice lunch for their trouble. Dan and BJ will work on a proposed Poker Run early next year to benefit the Tennessee Baptist Children's Home. Details and committee assignments to follow.
Dan also gave an encouraging report on his Mother in Iowa who is steadily recovering from her illness. Bill Jones if now out of the hospital and but still has six more weeks of therapy. Julia thanked all for their concern, support and loves the emails, wj4jj@aol.com and misses being at the meetings. We have others on our sick list and we want to continue our prayers for all.
We had three rides prior to our August meeting. The Phillips Grocery ride July 19th brought out eleven participants and we had seventeen members participate in the July 26th trip to the Catfish Motel and fourteen showed up for the August 9th trip to the Shiloh Battlefield and Milbourn's Mt. Carmel Market & Lodge. Good showing for all the rides.
We discussed Hurricane Elvis and all the damage the Super Storm caused and how we all coped with the inconvenience. Power outage varied from five minutes to thirteen days. But we were blessed that everyone survived unharmed.
New Business:
Thanks to Fran Salveson our "Earthquake, The Ride" flyer was in full color for once and evidently it promoted intense curiosity. The Saturday afternoon August 16th trip to the Lakeview Dinning Room at Reelfoot was a winner drawing fifteen bikes and twenty-one souls, more than any ride this year.
Saturday September 6th we will be riding to Beacon Light Café, Bon Aqua, TN for some good old home cooking. Details and itinerary will be forthcoming.
B. J. discussed our initial year long Mileage event starting with our September 11th meeting. Be sure to ride your bike to the September meeting and have your odometer reading recorded; of course you can sign on anytime but the sooner you do the more mileage you will accumulate.
Mike Hopper reported the upcoming Civil War reenactment September 27 & 28th was still on go; See the flyer.
We will continue to post upcoming rides/events in the newsletter, on the web page and at the meetings.
NOTICE: Memphis Tour Riders annual Christmas Party will be December 13th in lieu of our regular December meeting. We will again have our party at the Tennessee Baptists Children's Home benefiting one of the cottages. Make your plans now.
Thanks to all that brought door prizes. Win one bring one.
Quotation of the month: "We all take different paths in life, but no matter where we go, we take a little of each other with us everywhere"…………..Tim McGraw
Our next meeting will be Thursday September 11th, 2003.
No human in recorded history has ever seen this. The Red Planet, Mars will be the closest to Planet Earth on August 27th. Mars will rise in the south east at twilight and reach its zenith at 12:30 a.m. It will only be 34,649,589 miles away. If you miss it will be 60,000 years before you get the chance to view it this close again.
Ride Safe and have fun.
Stan and Jean
The September 2003 meeting was officially adjourned at 7:47PM

Long Distance Motorcycle Award

Remember to

"RIDE YOUR MOTORCYCLE TO THIS MONTH'S MEETING

If you are interested in competing for the Long Distance Award. Our official starting date will be Thursday, September 11th or the September meeting. All interested parties should ride to that meeting. Of course you can sign up later but you won't be accumulating mileage in between so the September meeting would be the best time to register.

One officer and one member must verify the mileage.

For instance, Terry Scott, our safety officer, can record a member's odometer reading then have Robert Crawford witness the form. In other words, one officer and one member must witness you registration form. All registration forms will be turned in to our secretary and kept on file till the September Meeting, 2004. Only one entry per member please. This may sound a bit unfair but we can't record two and three motorcycles as this would complicate things to the point of eliminating the fun. And please remember, this is not a contest. Its just something to do. The award itself will most likely be a plaque with a color rendition of the MTR logo, motorcycle Marque, the winner's name and mileage accumulated inscribed. These rules and regs may need some fine-tuning over the next few weeks but come the September meeting, consider them chizled in stone.
