On The Road

Dogwood Trail Rally

By
Tim Hendrickson

It was a beautiful day for riding as Doc. Gale and I wound our way down the Mississippi River Trail to Vicksburg on the GS's, arriving at the rally exit 19 off I-20 around 4:30 PM. I pulled into a gas station to let Doc take over and lead to the campground. He had asked me to lead down MS 1 since I was more familiar with the road, having traveled it many times in a cage (car)
The Rally site was a beautiful Private Campground called Askew's Landing. Nice lakeside camping, and lots of room for the rally. Friday afternoon we took the self guided tour of Vicksburg, enjoying the scenic old Antebellum Mansions, Dogwoods and Riverfront, even though it has changed dramatically with the addition of several Casino's. Back at the Rally, the Mississippi Club served Red Beans and Rice for Dinner and provided a Band for everyone's enjoyment.
David Moulder drove in from Tunica, where he was attending a work related seminar the previous day. Good to see a familiar face and fellow Ram member. He was pulling his trailer with "Shiftless" his new Burgman 650 "super scooter" in tow.
On Saturday, David and I participated in the Poker Run for charity through the Battleground National Park. A Very Beautiful and impressive place. I would recommend a trip to Vicksburg, just to tour this Historical Facility. Of special interest was the USS Cairo Union Gunboat that was salvaged during a record low water season and has been partially restored. It is on display at the entrance to the Museum.
For Dinner that night, the club invited a local vendor who served Catfish and Chicken, all you could eat, for $9.00 a plate. A little high priced, I thought, but very good indeed. A different band entertained the crowd till around midnight. At dusk they lit a huge bonfire, that was still a welcome source of warmth the next morning.
Doc and two other friends from Missouri elected me to map out a way home Sunday that would provide a little scenery and get them home before dark. I looked over my maps and decided on a route through the Delta National Forest that would bring us out around Greenwood MS near I-55. Problems developed when we discovered that the 50 mile route through the Forrest was a Charlie Gibson kind of road, gravel all the way. Doc and the other fellows, who were riding sport-touring bikes with fancy bodywork, decided to pass on the gravel. Being the adventuresome sort, I thought I might give it a try and went ahead with my plan. It wasn't long before the road conditions started getting worse, and upon meeting a local in a pickup, I discovered it wasn't going to get any better. Visions of being stranded in the boondocks set in and I decided to turn around and see if I could catch my buddies.
Back on Hwy. 61, Northbound and south of Greenville, my bike started acting up and making strange noises. Since I was out in the middle of nowhere, I decided to press on until I found at least a gas station where some form of civilization might be present.

AMA Long Rider Program

If you are an AMA member then you are eligible to apply for the AMA's Long Rider Program. The first level in the Long Rider Program is just 10,000 miles, so even if you're a new rider you can show that you've logged five-digit miles with many more ahead of you.
The program is based on the honor system, so no cheating. I've ridden over a 100,000 miles but not enough over to qualify for the 150,000-mile award. I'm in the middle somewhere so, I claimed the 100,000 miler.

I was tempted to cheat but my Mama, God rest her soul, would have a fit if I betrayed her charge. David Elston has also received his award and I think he claimed 75,000 miles. And at the meeting the other night I noticed that Hubert Gross's bike was sporting a 200,000 mile decal.
There's no cost to sign up. Long Rider Awards are $3.50 for pins, $2.50 for patches and a buck for a metalized decal. A shipping and handling charge of $1.50 per order is the same no matter how many pins, patches and decals you order.
Interested? You can find more information about the AMA Long Rider Program by clicking "Road" under "Riding" at www.AMADirectlink.com, the AMA's website. You can also join the AMA Long Rider Program online through their secure connection.

of civilization might be present. First place fitting that description was a wide spot in the road called Shaw. I pulled off the highway, got off the bike, and my heart sank. Fluids all over the rear swing arm. A real ugly mess!
I called Leo Goff, my Guru who advises me in all matters relating to motorcycle mechanics. He said it was either the rear drive unit or a driveshaft problem. In any case, I was done for the day. I called Marshal, thinking he might be able to swing by and pick me up. He had left the day before and spent the night in Greenville with a friend. He had just arrived home when I called. He offered to drive back down to pick me up and he also put me in touch with his buddy in Greenville.
I paged Steve Hamilton and he promptly returned my call. Turns out Steve had nothing better to do that Sunny Sunday afternoon than rescue a fellow club member and friend. So, the GS is now in the emergency room at the BMW Hospital where (its owner hopes) it will make a speedy and economical recovery. Wish me luck.

Batting a Thousand

Well, our first two rides this year have come and gone and both were rainouts. And you know who's to blame. David Elston, that's who. How you ask. You did just ask that didn't you? Well, I'll tell you how.
The day before the New Albany scheduled ride I was talking to David on the phone and he made the following statement, and I quote: "You know, over the years we've really been lucky when it comes to rain….." "Don't say it David" I yelled.. "Don't say it or you'll jinx our schedule for the rest of the year." But it was too late. The hex was in. David had put the whammy on us with his careless tongue and who knows how many rides will get rained out now. And I don't think we ought to let him get away with it. I think we should ride him unmercifully for the rest of the year or at least until we get a a ride in. Ah well. What's that they say? Behind every silver lining, there's always a cloud……………………….
