Official Journal of the Memphis Tour Riders

I was reading on a web site that in Japan from Jan to Oct of 2005 the number of motorcycles sold were 609,666 and of those 406,271 were 50 CC or less in engine size. (Source: Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association, Inc.)

I looked for some comparable data for the US and all I could find was in 2004 there were 996,000 unit sales in the US. My guess is most of them were not in the 50 CC and under category.

I for one would not be able to go very far on such a small motorcycle, probably couldn’t even sit on one to be true. But compare my 1300 CC motorcycle to my V-6 car and I am conserving gas and road space quite well.

I have never been to Japan but I can only imagine the scene on the streets with all those little bikes running around everywhere, and over 1 million people walking on the streets. Now imagine all of us roaring into town with our huge (by comparison) bikes, it might look like a scene from King Kong.

I am sure glad that I am celebrating this new year in the United States with my freedom to roam and enjoy what I want (and can afford to purchase) when I want it. We should all be happy today that we are Americans and celebrate it everyday in 2006

A Message from Sharon Englander

I want to thank everyone for their kind thoughts and prayers during Barry’s illness. Since we had only been in Tennessee for 2 1/2 years and have no family here, It really meant a lot to both
of us.

As you know Barry had recently bought a new bike and an in4ine trailer, I now have to sell these and I need help. I was just a passenger, and I know “nothing” about bikes, other than Barry and I had a lot of good times over the years riding around. So I am turning to you “our club” for help. I would greatly appreciate any advice or help that you could offer.

I hope to make some of the meetings in the future and keep in touch.

Our annual MTR Christmas Party December 10,2005, was again rewarding this year. We had approx 55 in attendance, including 20 boys from the ranch. Our MTR gifts for the children this year included volley balls, basketballs, tennis rackets, balls and inline skates to be used in their new pavilion when it is completed. We had plenty of good food and refreshments for all. Our thanks to US Foods for donating the ham butts, beans and buns and, to our fantastic chef, Tim Hendrickson, who again graciously volunteered to smoke and barbecue the ham butts as well as prepare the beans. Thanks to the membership for furnishing the donated soft drinks from Kroger, lots of side dishes and desserts to round out the excellent meal, also for donating a bunch of individual door prizes.
At the conclusion of the party, we were presented a “Organization of the Year, 2005” picture plaque from the Tennessee Baptist Children’s Homes. We also received a letter from Ray Moss, West TN Regional Vice-President in appreciation for our donations to the Baptist Children’s Home.
On December 14th, Santa with 5 Elves arrived at the Tennessee Baptist Children’s Homes Main Campus, on their motorcycles to distribute gifts he left under the Christmas tree. Needless to say, the children were happy to see Santa and sit on his lap as he passed out the gifts. Pictures of Santa and the Christmas party are on the web site.
I delivered the basket of goodies to Eddie and Bonnie Garner, our fantastic MTR Webmaster; they expressed their appreciation and gratitude for the goodies, and want to thank all the MTR members for their generosity. I also presented a framed certificate for a lifetime Membership in the Memphis Tour Riders, again in appreciation of Eddie’s efforts in continual making our web page the best.
Last but not least, please remember the dear ones we lost in 2005 and keep them and their family in your thoughts and prayers.
Ride safe and with a sense of awareness in 06.

New Heads Up Displays Hit the Market

SEATTLE, Nov. 14 /PRNewswire/ — The pioneers of the world’s first personal Heads Up displays have created two powerful products for motorcycle riders, SportVue(TM) MCI and MC2. The wireless display systems use “Top Gun” technology once reserved only for fighter pilots.

SportVue(TM) Heads Up displays mount onto full-face helmets, giving the rider a constant real-time view of critical information, such as speed, rpm, gear position, and radar alert. The data appears in a personal display to “hover” just above the horizon, focused at infinity.

“I first envisioned SportVue(TM) while racing in the
Indianapolis 500,” says SportVue creator and veteran race car driver Dominic Dobson. “Drivers lose precious seconds glancing down at dashboard displays. I started to think there must be a better way.”

With that vision, and with the help of virtual reality experts at the University of Washington’s Human Interface Technology Lab, Dobson created SportVue(TM). The new MC2 unit includes a new radar-detection feature, and is compatible with most existing radar detectors.

The first SportVue(TM) products, MCI and MC2 for
motorcycles, are available now, on-line at www.sportvue.com or through distributors worldwide. For a limited time, a special rebate program will save buyers up to $90.00 when
they buy Sportvue(TM) in time for the holidays.

The software allows for both serial and USB interfaces and is programmable for universal applications. Some uses include guidance systems for construction and agriculture, monitoring systems for manufacturing, measurement and testing systems for environmental monitoring, emergency response and situational awareness systems for law enforcement, military and first responders, and general communications systems, instant messaging and pager applications.
