Ontario Inland Valley Daily Bulletin: “String of CHP fatalities should wake up drivers”

Another California Highway Patrol officer killed in the line of duty, the sixth in five months, is a tragedy not only for the department and officers’ families, but for all California motorists, who rely on them for roadside aid and protection. The latest death, of Officer Gregory John Bailey, who was killed during a routine traffic stop Saturday night, is especially grievous. Bailey, a motorcycle officer who had spent the day guiding traffic at the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series races in Fontana, was on his way home when he pulled over a suspected drunken driver. That driver turned out to be sober. But ironically, a second suspected drunken driver crashed into Bailey, his motorcycle and the first car. In the wake of such reckless behavior on the highways that has cost the department the lives of so many honorable and courageous public servants, CHP Commissioner Mike L. Brown has ordered a statewide internal review of CHP practices. All six of the officers slain, two of whom were shot and killed after pulling over motorists and three who were struck by vehicles, were following CHP protocol, Brown said. It is absolutely appalling that CHP officers, who devote themselves to keeping the highways safe, are being mowed down themselves while performing their mission. Motorists who are putting others’ lives in danger should be ashamed of themselves, especially those who drink and get behind the wheel. They should pay the price. It is lime for everyone to review their own driving habits, and start driving more responsibly and courteously. Everyone who hits the road needs to pay more attention, so they don’t end up hitting someone and killing them. The safety of our highways depends on it.

We also had one visitor, Terry Taylor, come back next month. We appreciate the attendance of all.
We will have 3 Birthdays in March, Jerry Turner on the 5th, Eldon Reeves on the 8th and David Elston on the 13th. There will be 1 anniversary this month, Terry and Mary Carole Scott on the 23rd. Congratulations and best wishes to all.
We are still working on at least 2 additional advertisers/sponsors to replace the ones that did not renew. If you have anyone in mind, please cheek and see if they would like to include their business size ad in Happy Trails, as well as on the MTR web site. Wow, all for only $30.00/year. As always, please check with our advertisers/sponsors as you have need for their services.
We passed around the framed certificate for our “AMA Charter” for 2006. We are now in our 5th year of being an AMA Social Chartered Tennessee Organization.
We now have copies of our long anticipated ride schedule for 2006 with one a list of all the current proposed rides that Billy has been organizing and working on, Billy intentionally left a lot of weekends open so we would have options for rain dates, also not much riding in July and August due to the hot weather considerations. Please check web site for updates.
As you will note March 18th is the annual Mid South Cycle Show, Mike Hopper passed out $1.00 off admission tickets, if you didn’t get yours at the meeting, just let him know. The Agricenter is our starting point for the ride to Brad’s Bar-B--Q restaurant in Moscow. Some of you may remember it used to be Lewis’s Restaurant. Thanks’ to David Elston for finding it.
With reference to the scheduled July 15th Burnt Burger V cookout at Arkabutla we discussed and decided on the following revisions.
1. Cookout will now be in the afternoon at 3:00 PM rather than in the heat of the day at noon, we have our pavilion reserved until 10 PM.
2. MTR will furnish and cook the hamburgers, hotdogs, etc, and furnish the buns, condiments, plates, plastic utensils, (bring your own silverware if you don’t like plastic), but the rest of the meal will be pot luck, furnished by the attendees, bring your favorite dish along with serving utensils, desserts including your own cold drinks, like we do at the Christmas Party. This way we will get more folks involved in the preparation of the goodies for the picnic.
Dan report on the 1st annual Cold Nose Ride benefiting the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, January 14th starting at the
Bumpus-Collierville location, he estimated 85 or so bikes signed up and that the Boiling Point was a good place to eat.
Several members attended the annual Easy Riders V-Twin Bike show at the Cook Convention Center, February 11th, big turnout, however Floyd and I were there over an hour before we saw someone we knew. There were plenty of beautiful expensive custom bikes. Most were not made to ride in comfort but generally meant to be conversation pieces; many in the $50,000.00 range. The Godfathers entry won the Spectator Best of Show. Dirty South took 1st and 2nd in the Judged Bike class; NASCAR was the theme of their bikes.
Dan and I still have tickets to the Cycle World International Motorcycle Show in Atlanta on March 17-19, 2006 if anyone is going.
April 22/23rd is our overnighter to the annual Honda Superbike Classic Race at Barbers Motorsports Park near
Birmingham, AL Our Hotel is The Comfort Inn & Suites Leeds, 1951 Village Drive, Moody, AL,# 205-640-6600 reports they are now full but there are other motels in the area that may still have rooms? David Elston will likely lead the ride and he suggested it would be best for all going to purchase their tickets at the gate when entering the track and not try to coordinate group purchases. Billy will email the itinerary latter.
Also the Freedom Wings, Mousetail Picnic 2006 will be June 2-3 again at Mousetail Landing State Park near Parsons, TN, contact Don at 731424-6722, we passed out flyers. Don and Marion reported there would again be a lot of good food.
Thanks to all that brought door prizes, remember win one bring one.
Our next meeting will be Thursday March 9th same place, same time.
MTR theme for 2006 is to Ride Safe and with a sense of awareness.

Meeting adjourned at 7:55 PM

TEXAS BIG Riding The New Suzuki
Boulevard, M109 By: Neale Bayly

Choosing the vast, open Hill County outside of Austin, Texas, to launch their new power cruiser, the MIO9R,
Suzuki picked the perfect location for more than one reason. As a part of the county where the open roads seem to go on forever, the scenery is rugged without being distractingly stunning, as well as being home to ex-500cc World Champion Kevin Schwantz. As Suzuki’s chosen son, Kevin would lead a dozen journalists for a ride that would go west to the one horse town of Luckenbach, before circling around
back to his place for a Texas cookout. Accompanied by the top brass from Suzuki, Mr. Gato and Mel Harris heading the list, we even had the pleasure of the lovely Miss Suzuki’s company in case we wanted a change of scenery.

In the same style as all press launches, we were introduced to the new machine before our ride, and for me it was the first time I had seen the newest Boulevard In person. Kicked back on the side stand in the meeting room, the MIO9R has a striking presence, with its long, low, solid appearance. It is
also very wide, and with its butch inverted front forks,
massive 240 section rear tire and swooping bodywork, there is no doubt Suzuki has come up with their own unique version of what a power cruiser should be.

Bits and pieces: “The taxpayer. That’s someone who
works for the federal government but doesn’t have to
take the civil service examination.”

Some legislation that passed in Tennessee last year
that concerns motorcyclist

HB0652/SB0635 The City of Memphis, (for their own reasons?)
proposed a law that would make the use of strobing brake lights
illegal on motorcycles. At our request, the two legislators carrying
the bill dropped it.

Military License Plates RB 1679/SB7 14 by Rep. Yokley and Sen. Southerland This law enables motorcyclists to have 23 different types of military service tags. These tags have been available as car tags for some time. Motorcyclists now have equal access to them

Apehanger Handlebars HB1242/SB1265 by Rep. Godsey and Sen. Ramsey Tennessee had a law that made handlebars more than 15 inches higher than the seat illegal. The law was passed in 1969. House Bi111242/Senate Bill1265 completely deleted that law from the books. (They could have left this one on the books)

May as Motorcycle Safety and Awareness Month HJROO2I by
Rep. Matheny We used this proclamation to go to the Tennessee
Dept of Safely and ask for funds to help with motorcycle
awareness. CMT/ABATE was awarded a $15,000 grant that we used to pay for 38 billboards across the state. Our message asked the public to watch out for us and to please quit running over us with their cars, trucks and mini-vans.

(We should look at how we can help spread the word)
