Road Trips

A couple of weeks ago Mark Hanson and I went for a Saturday afternoon ride. We went east for a while and then started down some back roads that went every direction. The weather was cool in the upper 40’s and we were going about 50 miles an hour most of the time. It was a great ride that went to places I did not know existed. The best part was we never left Shelby County once. We rode for almost two hours and were within 10 miles of my house all the time. I usually think of a good ride going to another state or section of the country. Here I had a great time this close to home. As long as the ride is good it doesn’t matter where it is.

AMA News

Tennessee Senate Bill 3032,
introduced by Senator Thelma Harper
(D—Nashville, 19), would amend
Tennessee Code to allow no
motorcycle operator to carry a
passenger on a motorcycle who is
less than the age of nine (9) years.

Volunteer State riders should
immediately contact their Senator’s
office in Nashville and politely let them
know that it should be the parents, not
the state, who decide when their
children ride motorcycles.

The status of this bill, as well as most
motorcycle-related legislation
throughout the country can be viewed
by accessing StateWatch on the
American Motorcyclist Association’s
(AMA) Rapid Response Center at
www.AMADirectLink.com. This service
is available to all riders thanks to
those who join the AMA.

AMA information, as discussed last year about this time, the money MTR spent on the TBCH Kids Christmas is reported on our AMA Charter application form. This year the AMA Chartable Donations reported totaled 6.4 million dollars, 1 million more than last year, proving Motorcyclist not only care- they do something about it by helping other motorcyclists and they care about everyone-rider or not. Incidentally AMA reports they now have 260,000 members.

Letter to the Editor of the Commercial Appeal written by Syndi. Way to GO!!!!!!!!!!!!

Cycling deaths could be avoided

The warm riding weather is barely upon us, and already Memphis tallies three motorcycle deaths in as many days. All three deaths occurred when a motor vehicle violated the motorcyclist’s right-of-way.

Johnny Aden, 25, and Branch Fox, 20, two young people just beginning life, were killed March 12 when an SUV made a left turn in front of their motorcycle.

In an almost identical scenario, James “Beau” Beaubouef, 46, a well-known and well-loved motorcyclist from Olive Branch, was killed when a mail truck pulled out in front of him. All three motorcyclists were wearing helmets.

When are Tennessee and Mississippi going to learn? Helmets don’t save lives. Motorcycle awareness, safety and education, coupled with stricter right-of-way violations, do.

It is high time the Mid-South came into the 21st century and joined the rest of the country by providing affordable state-funded motorcycle education, safety and awareness programs and enacting tougher right-of-way violation laws.

As fuel prices continue to rise, motorcycles increasingly become a more feasible means of transportation. The people who caused these accidents are likely to face nothing more serious than a right-of-way violation and a small fine.

Let’s stop giving people free rein to run us over. I don’t want to be another statistic in what could well be a record-breaking year.
