A Brief History of Veterans Day

Veterans Day, formerly known as Armistice Day, was originally
set as a U.S. legal holiday to honor the end of World War I, which
officially took place on November 11, 1918. In legislature that was
passed in 1938, November 11 was “dedicated to the cause of world
peace and to be hereafter celebrated and known as ‘Armistice Day.”’
As such, this new legal holiday honored World War I veterans.

In 1954, after having been through both World War II and the
Korean War, the 83rd U.S. Congress — at the urging of the veterans
service organizations — amended the Act of 1938 by striking out
the word “Armistice” and inserting the word “Veterans.” With the
approval of this legislation on June 1, 1954, Nov. 11 became a day
to honor American veterans of all wars.

In 1968, the Uniforms Holiday Bill insured three-day weekends
for federal employees by celebrating four national holidays on
Mondays: Washington’s Birthday, Memorial Day, Veterans Day,
and Columbus Day. Under this bill, Veterans Day was moved to
the last Monday of October. Many states did not agree with this
decision and continued to celebrate the holiday on its original date.
The first Veterans Day under the new law was observed with much
confusion on Oct. 25, 1971.

Finally on September 20, 1975, President Gerald R. Ford signed a
law which returned the annual observance of Veterans Day to its
original date of Nov. 11, beginning in 1978. Since then, the
Veterans Day holiday has been observed on Nov. 11.

Mind Bender of the Month

Subject: Math Problem

A math trick so unbelievable that it will
stump you.

1. Grab a calculator. (you won’t be able to
do this one in your head)

2. Key in the first three digits of your
phone number (NOT the area code)

3. Multiply by 80

4. Add 1

5. Multiply by 250

6. Add the last 4 digits of your phone
number

7. Add the last 4 digits of your phone
number again

8. Subtract 250

9. Divide number by 2

Do you recognize the answer?

We will have 3 Birthdays in November, Eddie Gamer on the 5th, Linda Randall on the 9th and Floyd Nunnelee on the 16th. We will have 1 anniversary, Myron and Beverly Coney on the 20th. Congratulations and best wishes to all. Hope I didn’t I miss anyone?
We want to welcome our newest members, living in Hawaii, Capt. Jake and Melissa Atkins; they ride a black Boulevard C, Suzuki. Melissa is Dan’s
daughter. Eddie has updated the members web page, removing those that didn’t renewed. We currently have 26 memberships. Thanks to all that
renewed, we appreciate and express thanks for your support. Please check the MTR web site often for updates. This is especially important before every scheduled ride; it could be postponed due to various circumstances?
Old Business:
September 30th. Lambert’s, home of the Throwed Rolls, Sikeston, MO was again a success, attending were Billy and Hildia, Tod and Cindy, Bob
Branch, Dan, Floyd, Russell Higgins, Terry Scott and me. Good weather, good food and side dishes, we all caught our share of  throwed rolls. We
crossed the Mighty Mississippi on the ferry north of Tiptonville, TN on the way home. Check web for pictures.
October 7th and 8th Blazing Saddles our overnighter and dinner at Cahoots Restaurant in the old jail, Fayetteville, TN. We had a good meal, enjoyed the fellowship and in all a good time for all. We had 15 members and 2 guests make the ride on 8 bikes and 2 trikes. 5 couples left for Gatlinburg for the week (BJ, Hildia, David, Brenda, Charlie, Darnell, Buck, Donna and guests Rick and Sandra Dowdy). The rest of us came back home, Floyd, Rick, Terry, MC. Paul, Dian and me. Beautiful weather, fall colors were coming and a nice ride. Pictures on the web.
Thanks again to David Elston for sending the good tire information article from Dunlap. Good stuff; it discussed the importance of inspecting your
tires before each ride as well as maintaining the correct air pressure. As noted the tire does not support the load-the air pressure does. As a suggestion
we all could benefit from reviewing it, good stuff to know and practice. Also the article from Dick Salveson in the newsletter about not using cruise
control when it’s raining is also good advice.
Dick has also suggested a Club song, Frankie Laine’s “Blazing Saddles” and has composed 3 verses to go with the music, let’s review at our
November meeting.
New business:
The members re nominated the current MTR Officers for another year, thus eliminating the need for a vote at our November meeting.
The Officers are: President, Stan Viets Vice President, Floyd Nunnelee Treasurer, Hildia Max Secretary, Darnell Gibson Road Commander, Billy Max
Editor and Public Relations, Dan Randall
On behalf of the Officers, we thank the membership for their vote of confidence, we appreciate your support.
Saturday October 14.2006 The Muscular Dystrophy Assn Poker Run, with approx. 150 riders raised $2600.00 for MDA, beautiful day for the event
Saturday November 4.2006 The Veterans Thunder VI, will again originate at Bumpus but this year end at Wolfchase Galleria. This Ride of Honor has grown too large to safely organize a parade and ride to Tunica. I passed out flyers at the meeting, if you have any questions, call me. Let’s support this Veterans event again this year and participate.
Special Notice: We will have our Christmas Party at the Tennessee Baptist Children’s Ranch, in lieu of our December meeting Saturday December
16th, plan on being there around 11:00 A. MI to help in setting up. We again are planning on gifts for the boys at the Ranch. Tim Hendrickson will
again do the cooking/grilling, thanks Tim. Members will bring side dishes, desserts, etc. We will discuss details at our November meeting. (Editors
note... The Boys ranch has asked us to move the party to the 14 or 15th. We will discuss at Thursday meeting)
For our future planning information, Billy always provides in depth itinerary emails for our rides. We as a group thanked Billy Max for all the work
and effort he puts into the detailed planning of our MTR rides and look forward to our 2007 schedule.
As some of you may know The Hut in Somerville has reopened and I recently ate lunch there, it is still first-rate with good service and would be a
great destination for a dinner ride. We also stopped there Sunday on the way hack from the Blazing Saddles Ride.
Thanks to Performance Plus for again renewing their ad for 2007 We can still use additional advertisers/sponsors. As always please use their
services when you can.
Wow, it pays to encourage the need for door prizes in Happy Trails as evidenced by the number at the October meeting. Thanks to all that brought
them.
Our next meeting will be Thursday November 9th. MTR theme for 2006 is to Ride Safe and with a sense of awareness. That’s all Folks; enjoy the fall colors and weather.

Dick S. Has submitted the below as a possible chapter song.

Please look it over and let us know what you think

Dick's Frankie Laine’s “Blazing Saddles”

We ride our blazing saddles. We wear our leather vests

Our mission is to ride the highways, North South East and West

High gas prices do not deter us riders

We'll ride all night until the morning gray

Our blazing saddles have turned the night into day

When trouble happens as we travel through this great land

The Memphis Tour Riders will step in to lend a hand

We needed a fearless leader to guide us around bad roads and rain

Then out of the sun came a man with a plan

And Road Commander is his name yes Road Commander is his name

We rode our blazing saddles. We wore our leather vests

We rode all of the highways from North to South and East to West

We kept on riding as gas prices reached the sky
We rode all night into day until the sun shone high

As we followed the Road Commander and never questioned why
