I don’t get it. Out of one corner of their mouth ABATE of Tennessee says they are a non-profit political organization that promotes safety and out of the other they oppose helmet laws, laws against popping wheelie’s on the highways, children under 12 riding as passengers and mandatory rider training for new riders.. .Well, actually I do get it. It has nothing to do with safety. Its all about the right to be irresponsible and an attitude that harkens back to the sixties and that old hippiemantra, “If it feels good, do it”.

Our Mission: CMT/ABATE, Inc. is not a “Biker Club”, but a non-profit, political organization that was formed to preserve freedom and safety for all Tennesseans who enjoy motorcycling.
CMT/ABATE Supports:
HB1283/SB1511 Helmet Law Modification — Allows adults 21 and over “Freedom of Choice
HB1335/SB0794 Right Of Way Violations — Increases the fine and gives judges discretion to suspend licenses of those who kill or seriously injure motorcyclists, pedestrians, bicyclists or automobile drivers.

CMT/ABATE Opposes:
HBI536/SB0101 which would make it illegal to carry children under 12 as passengers on a motorcycle.
HB1298 Mandatory Rider Training for persons seeking a motorcycle endorsement.

Other issues we are watching include:
HB0201/SB0550 - Traffic Safety - Adds driving motorcycle while front tire is off the ground to offense of reckless driving; violation is a Class B misdemeanor.

Get out and RIDE!!!!

Motorcycle and Scooter Ride to Work Day is Wednesday, July 18,2007

This year’s sixteenth annual motorcycle and scooter commuting demonstration will increase the number of riders on the road, according to Ride to Work, a non-profit advocacy organization. “Riding to work on this day shows the positive value of motorcycles and scooters for transportation. For many people, riding is an economical, efficient and socially responsible form of mobility that saves energy. helps the environment and provides a broad range of other public benefits,” states Andy Goldfine, the event organizer. Motorcycle and scooter enthusiasts and rider organizations worldwide encourage their members to ride to work on this day.

According to the United States Census Bureau and the Department of Transportation, over eighty million cars and light trucks are used for daily commuting on American roads, and about 200,000 motorcycles and scooters are a regular part of this mix. On Ride to Work Day, the practical side of riding becomes more visible as a larger number of America’s 8,000,000 cycles are ridden to work.

Ride to Work Day helps demonstrate how these vehicles make parking easier and help traffic flow better. Studies have shown that across equal distances commuting motorcyclists reach their destinations in less time than those using automobiles, that motorcycles and scooters consume less resources per mile than automobiles, and that they take up less space on roads. Motorcycle and scooter riders seek improved employer recognition and support for this form of transportation, and more public and government awareness of the positive value of riding

Heads Up MTR Stolen Motorcycle

Keep your eyes peeled for a 2006 Suzuki C90

One of the guys that Darnell works with had his motorcycle stolen. A lady and her son came by his home to purchase the motorcycle.
Apparently their check was no good. Now he can’t find them so the bike is considered stolen.
The motorcycle belongs to Mike Hillis 901/268-1373
It’s a Black 2006 Suzuki C90
no bags or windshield Dallas cowboys license plate frame
On the right handside, below and to the right of the C90 cover there is a small dent
The bike is considered Stolen Please call the Memphis police department or Mike Hillis.

Are you riding with the correct helmet?

The Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) known as FMVSS 218 (49CFR57 1.218), describes in great detail the requirements for “DOT” certification of all helmets sold in the United States for use by motorcyclists. Helmets that do not meet the minimal DOT certification standards may not be sold as “motorcycle helmets.” The Snell Memorial Foundation is an additional certification source intended to provide testing and “Snell” certification to a different standard than FMVSS 218. The Snell certification doesn’t replace the DOT certification and is in fact a voluntary standard. All motorcycle helmets sold in the U.S.A. must be DOT certified, but they are not required to be Snell certified. A motorcycle helmet that carries both DOT and Snell certification may have gone through different testing schemes, but may not
necessarily be superior to helmets that carry only the DOT certification. There’s lots of controversy over standards and testing, and it gets even
more complicated if you consider the European ECE 22.05 standard.
