Time, the one resource we can’t make more of. We can buy more gas, water, oil, food, clothes but not time. That is the reason this new letter is running late, I ran out of time. Too little time sure makes one worry, just ask my other half. I hope to make more time this month for our newsletter and Boys Ranch party. It should be a good time. The other thing I haven’t had time for lately is a ride, got to make time for that real soon.

My time is about to be taken up by our granddaughter Natalie, her mom and dog. This will show my other half why I need two bikes. (just in ease one is broken) This winter will be fun time at our house with the little one here. Now in case you are wondering I counted the number of times I used the word time in the above and my count was 11 times.

I was blessed to have my 80th birthday this month, thanks Dan for the MTR cake. My surprise party was hosted by Don and Teresa, what a wonderful surprise, totally unexpected and I am appreciative. Also my birthday ride thru the State of Arkansas on Highways 14/65/68/13 to Kimberling Heights, Mo. Beautiful weather, fantastic motorcycle roads and the scenery on Highways 7/64 on the way home. Thanks to all that were able to be there and help me celebrate my BIG one.

We discussed and agreed to again have our MTR Christmas Party at the TBCH Boy’s Ranch and purchase gifts for the boys. At the moment we do not have a date but hopefully it will be one of the first two Saturdays in December. Dan will be checking with the Ranch for available dates and venders to donate the main course. (See the editors update elsewhere in this news letter)

Dian will be planning the accompanying food dishes to compliment the donated food and avoid duplication. As soon as the main course is known, I will email her food list to all so you will have a choice of food dishes needed, please specify the dish (s) you will bring, return to Dian and copy me. Thanks!
Also Dan has access to an assortment of toy bears this year and will be contacting various charities; we will ride and deliver the bears. If you know of any churches, hospitals or children’s homes in the area that could use these bears please let Dan know. The bears are surplus ones used in online Florist Arrangements and are being updated for next year.

On behalf of the present officers that were re nominated at the meeting and reelected to serve another year, we thank you.

Boys Ranch Christmas Party Update
Date: Dec 8th

Time: 11:00 to 2:00

Place: Boys Ranch Millington TN
Number of Boys: 17

Number of Houses: 5

Total number with Staff and House Parents: 30. The Club agreed at the meeting to the following... We would have a pizza party for the boys. We would also ask Tim H to procure some fine pork from Chucks so we can provide each house with one Pork Butt filly smoked (but not on site this year unless he wants to). On a side note The members would Ike to have some pork butt themselves so maybe we could get a whole case and those that want one can for the cost of food and preparation. I will Contact Tim about this.

What the members need to bring are deserts, drinks, (Hilda volunteered BJ for this) and some door prizes for the boys etc. The boys are all at least 12 years old. I am
not sure how old the other children are.

The Pizzas will be from Dominos they give the Boys Ranch the single topping ones for $5.00 each. We should get approx.22 pizzas. I will take care of this.
Stan is looking into the club gift this year of two Basketball Hoops
I look forward to seeing everyone there. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me venture69@comcast.net.

Motorcycle Headlamp Modulator
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A Motorcycle Headlight Modulator (or simply Headlight Modulator) is an accessory device that oscillates the intensity of a daytime-illuminated motorcycle headlamp at 240 cycles per minute (4Hz). The intensity is modulated between approximately 20% and 100% of normal steady-burning intensity. The headlight operates at full intensity 50~70% of the time. US and Canadian regulations require headlight modulators to include a light sensor that disables modulation when the ambient light level drops below a certain point. When this happens, the headlamps burn steadily.

Purpose
Motorcycles in the United States have since the mid-l970s been wired so as to operate the low beam headlamp whenever the engine is running. This is not required by any Federal regulation, but is rather a matter of voluntary industry policy. The Hurt Report of 1981 found “Conspicuity of the motorcycle is a critical factor in the multiple vehicle accidents, and accident involvement is significantly reduced by the use of motorcycle headlamps (on in daylight) and the wearing of high visibility yellow, orange or bright red jackets” and “Conspicuity of the motorcycle is most critical for the frontal surfaces of the motorcycle and rider”. However, as increasing numbers of vehicles are equipped with daytime running lights, there is concern that the daytime-illuminated motorcycle headlamp may no longer provide a significant conspicuity benefit. Therefore, some motorcyclists install headlamp modulators in the belief they increase motorcycle conspicuity in traffic.

Science
While there are no studies supporting the headlamp modulator as an effective motorcycle safety device, there have been some studies suggesting headlamp modulators may increase the conspicuity of motorcycles: “Olson, P L, Halstead-Nussloch, Rand Sivak, M (1979) Development and testing of techniques for increasing the conspicuity of motorcycles and motorcycle drivers. Final report” (ILl) “The results indicate that daytime conspicuity can most effectively be improved by use of fluorescent garments or steady or modulating lights.” “Florida Highway Patrol Emergency Lighting Research & Prototype Evaluation March 2004’ (127D. While this study was performed to determine the best lighting to protect law enforcement officers, it examines how motorist react to various lighting on vehicles. This study suggests
“...flashing lights are more conspicuous than steady lights”.

Laws about Headlamp Modulators
In the United States, FMVSS 108 (Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards) (49 CFR Part 571.108 S7.9.4) allows motorcycle headlamp modulation systems in all 50 states provided they comply with the standards set forth in this section. Furthermore, Title 49 USC 30l03(bl) (US Code) prohibits any state from forbidding a system that conforms to FMVSS 108. The Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) is available at 1.a1. In the search enter 49 for Title, 571 for Part and 108 for Section. The paragraph that discusses motorcycle headlight modulation systems is S7.9.4. The United States Code (USC) is available at j.jl. In the search enter 49USC30103 In Canada, Technical Standards Document No. 108, Revision 3 Lamps, Reflective Devices and Associated Equipment contains language nearly identical to the US code. The code is available at j~.[. Scroll down the page (or use the search in your browser) and locate paragraph S7.9.4 Retrieved from “http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MotorcycleHeadlampModulator
