Catfish Hotel Ride
De-Brief - by: B.J. Max

August 22, 2009

Everything about this ride was great other than it being the last dinner ride of the year. Yes, we still have a few rides left but they are all special events such as multiple day rides and our annual cookout at Arkabutla. It's hard to put a finger on what was the best part of this ride, the weather or the food. The food was delicious and hot and the staff as friendly and helpful as you could ask but the weather may have topped even that. I mean after all, this is the middle of August and we had fall like temperatures, Hildia even complaining of it being a bit to cool on the ride home. That Canadian air mass that descended on us a couple days earlier made for perfect riding weather. You just don't get many days like that and I was surprised that the turn out, although good, wasn't better.

We met at the Kroger store in Collierville. Eleven bikes and nineteen folks showed up. As scheduled, we pulled out at three PM and took highway 57 and 22 to the Tennessee River and the Catfish Hotel. We arrived around 5:20 PM and the parking lot was packed with cars, pickup trucks and motorcycles and they have a big parking lot. Sooo, we had to wait a little while but it was well worth it. It gave us time to socialize a bit, something we don't seem to get to do a whole lot but even though we had to wait, the only complaints I heard was not from impatient riders but hungry ones.

Lot of history surrounding the Catfish Hotel. The property has been in the Hagy family since before the Civil War and sits right next to the Shiloh National Battlefield, so close in fact you can touch the trees from the porch of the restaurant. And in y opinion, the food is as good as the Lake View Inn at Reelfoot, if not better....And they serve generous helpings too. We will be going back. In fact, next year we just might schedule two rides to this great destination. I don't think there's a single solitary soul in this bunch that would mind two helpings a year of this fantastic food. Man those hushpuppies were good weren't they?

If you were with us, Thanks for coming. If you weren't, we missed you...

Roll Call: Paul Romesburg, Richard & Donna Hightower, Tod & Cindy Beers, Floyd Nunnelee, David Elston & Brenda Crawford, Buck & Donna Perminter, Charley & Darnel Gibson, Danny Parker, Bob Branch, Paul & Diann Talkington, Hildia Max and Yours Truly.

Some dubious stats about this ride: We logged 200 miles measuring from here at Central Command on Brackenbury Lane. Our average speed was 42.7 mph and our maximum velocity attained was 77.1 mph...And I got an incredible 40.4 miles to the gallon pulling a cargo trailer. Best ever for me on the 1800.
