Our cookout at Arkabutla was again a hit. And again, as last year, we thought early on in the event that we had bought to much grub but before the day was over, everything, with the exception of a few bottles of water, was gobbled up and that was exactly the way we planned it. Doesn't always work out that way but it was planned.
Hildia and Brenda were responsible for the setup, Mike and I hung the banner, set up the drinks and ice and I pretty much managed to get in the way whenever possible. But, David was the star of this little show. He did the food that included baked beans, Bar-B-Q brisket, pork and the smoked sausage. And I don't think anybody would disagree, it was delicious. You can't buy Bar-B-Q any better than David's, period. It was that good.
At 11:30 we were beginning to wonder if anybody was gonna' join us. One hour later we had 42 folks on hand making this the most successful cookout ever. Later, as folks began drifting towards home a few of us hung in there and had a great bull session about cookouts past and rides that we enjoyed and we reminisced about MTR Members that had ridden on ahead...Floyd in particular. Why Floyd? Mainly because he was such a character but also because his last ride with us was a year ago to this same event. Yes, we had our laughs at his expense but old. Floyd was such an eccentric old coot how could we not laugh. But it was all in fondness. And if he could look down and hear us talking and laughing about his antics, I guarantee you he would be puff up, elbow St. Peter and brag about how he started the whole thing. But aggravating or no, I miss the old scudder.
