MTR Christmas Party 2010 Version

De-Brief - by: B.J. Max

December 18, 2010

Our Christmas party this year was once again held at Old Timers Restaurant in Millington and it was as usual a success. We had 29 folks join in and with another group in the same room with us, we had a full house. The food at Old Timers was as always good and we once again played the Dirty Santa Game. Kinda' hard to carry it off though what with all the noise of sixty people in the same room. But, as it turned out, the party atmosphere was enhanced by all the racket around us and we had a great time.

You would think that reserving a room for a party would be easy wouldn't you. Well it ain't. What began as a simple phone call morphed into a nightmarish aggravation. Back in the summer I called to make reservations for the Green Room at Old Timers. In the past a big wheel businessman that was friends with the owner of Old Timers had the Green Room permanently reserved on the weekend prior to Christmas and we could never get it so I was surprised when Teresa, the reservations gal, told me yes, the room was available. No problem. So I booked it but, just to be on the safe side I called Old Timers about a month ago and confirmed that we did indeed have the Green Room, not that itty bitty hallway they call the Red Room that we were stuffed into a couple years ago. Oh yes said Teresa, you are booked into the Green Room Saturday the 18th at 6:00 PM. Great. Everything was going as planned. At least I thought it was.

Five days before our party I got a call from Teresa. She said that she was just confirming that we were still coming. Oh yes I said, and we will be in the Green Room right? "Well, she said, we've got a bit of a problem. We have another group booked in the Green Room. But I can put y'all in the Red Room." That's when the argument began but I stood my ground. So she said she would call the other group and see if they might be more tolerant. Read that, give up their reservations and get stuffed into that little room... I hung up and two minutes later the phone rang. It was Teresa again and she went to talking to me as if she hadn't spoken to me since last summer. Finally I realized that I was also the other party booked into the Green Room. Can you believe it? We had mistakenly been booked in twice, once as the MTR party of 35 and once as B. J. Max, party of 35.

Well that settled everything, just a simple misunderstanding right?. Well you would think so but no, seems she had booked yet another party, this one with 65 people. Now things were getting out of hand. She had obviously overbooked and was trying desperately to wriggle out of it. That's when I sent the e-mail asking for a head count. I called her back with a figure of 29. She thanked me and said "Trust me, I'm gonna' make y'all happy." Uh huh! I had a used car salesman tell me that one time and now I was convinced that we would be in that little bitty room again.

But nope, I was wrong. We did have to share the Green Room with another party but it all worked out and Teresa did do a good job under the circumstances. She also comped me my first glass of wine and that eased the tension somewhat. Everything worked itself in the end but as you can see, planning a party is not simply a matter of picking up the phone and calling in a reservation. Anybody want to step up and plan next year's party? If so, the job is all yours. I'm still wondering how I got stuck with this detail in the first place.
